Pregnancy and Chiropractic...

Chiropractic care should be an important part of your prenatal and postnatal care. Dr. Myers has  training and experience in caring for mothers whether it's before or after delivery. He understands that pre-existing spinal misalignments can lead to neuromuscular and bio mechanical imbalances which stress the body and cause women to have discomfort and difficulty performing normal, daily activities. Dr. Myers performs thorough examinations and gentle, specific adjustments to help get your body functioning as it was designed. Lets look at how chiropractic can help you during the various stages of pregnancy.

When planning to have a baby, one may not realize how important proper nervous system function and structural support are in the health of both the mother and the baby. Chiropractic care will help:

  • Promote brain to body communication

  • Correct spinal imbalances

  • Correct and maintain pelvic bone alignment

After correction of the alignment of their spine many women are finding better function and often improvement with their health needs

During pregnancy, the body undergoes many changes to help develop that new life. These changes include:

  • Weight gain

  • Change in weight distribution

  • More stress on joints

  • Increased curve in lower back

  • Increased pelvic stress

  • Hormonal changes

  • Fatigue

These changes add extra stress to the mother's spine and joints which make it easier for spinal misalignments to occur. These misalignments can lead to pain, discomfort, and pelvic imbalance. Pelvic imbalance puts tension on the structures that support the baby which will cause the baby not to be able to move freely within the womb. This can lead to a breech position which is not ideal for delivery. Dr. Myers is trained in the Webster Technique which is specifically designed to restore pelvic balance.

Labor and delivery can be less traumatic for women who utilize chiropractic care. During the birthing process, the baby passes between the pelvis and the sacrum (tail bone). If the pelvis or sacrum is misaligned, the birth canal becomes narrower, increasing the difficulty of labor. Chiropractic care ensures that the spine and pelvis are properly aligned allowing for the ideal environment for birth to take place.

After Delivery

During delivery, the mother has gone through quite a work out. She has exhausted almost every last bit of energy to deliver her baby. Then, at last, she sees her beautiful child for the first time and all the difficulty of labor was worth it. The recovery from delivering a baby takes time and will have discomfort whether chiropractic care is utilized or not, but many women find they are able to recover faster and manage the new demands of motherhood better with chiropractic care. We want to make sure that the mother is well, but don't forget about the baby!

Babies should be check shortly after birth as well to make sure that their spine is properly aligned and that their delicate little nervous system is working properly. Some possible signs that a baby may need a chiropractic adjustment are:

  • Difficulty nursing

  • Difficulty latching on

  • Favors nursing one side more

  • Difficulty turning head to one side

  • Torticollis

  • Acid reflux

  • Colic

  • Constipation

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Irritable

Dr. Myers has been trained in chiropractic care for babies and used techniques that are much more gentle than those normally used on an adult. He has extensive experience in pediatric chiropractic care and adjusts newborn babies frequently. As a father of four, Dr. Myers has seen first hand the importance of chiropractic in the development of newborns.
