Chiropractic Care for Children
A common question that I often hear asked is: “Should children be adjusted by a chiropractor?”
Let me answer that question by explaining chiropractic care. A chiropractor locates, analyses, and corrects spinal misalignments. The emphasis is on a vertebrae of the spine that has become “stuck” out of place. A misaligned vertebrae will not move properly and will also press on nerves. These nerves are the connection between the body and the brain. When they are compressed, the body stops working properly which could show a wide variety of symptoms that may or may not include pain.
Spinal misalignments have many causes which may include: twisting of the spine, falls, poor posture, awkward sleeping positions, over use, obesity, car accidents, sports injuries, and muscle imbalances.
In order to answer the question, “Should children be adjusted by a chiropractor?”, I need to ask a couple of questions. Does this child have a spine? The answer is obviously, yes. Has this child done something that could cause a spinal misalignment such as: twisting the spine, falling, having poor posture, sleeping in awkward positions, being overweight, being in a car accident, or playing sports.
What I have observed in my office is that many children do not need to be adjusted. Their spines are young and healthy, however, I have seen many children who do need to be adjusted. Their symptoms usually include headaches, muscle aches, and back pain in older children. Younger children and babies often show symptoms of fussiness, ear aches, or a short leg.
The chiropractic adjustment for children is very similar to one given to adults, however, the adjustment is much more gentle for children. Only low force techniques should be used. Chiropractic treatment for children, when given by a properly trained chiropractor, can be life changing for the child and the parent.
